Adding A Stone Date of Death Scroll To A Grave Marker
By Joseph Mccabe

Stone grave markers are very popular in many of the cemeteries throughout the country. In fact, many of the modern memorial parks require Stone grave markers over any other type of headstone. Given this fact many surviving family members are tasked with the job of adding a death date scroll to their departed loved one's Stone memorial.

Sounds simple, doesn't it? Only problem is that depending on when the original Stone marker was purchased or from what company, it can be difficult to find the right Stone date scroll. There are several reasons why this task may become complicated.

The original company the Stone grave marker was bought from has gone out of business
The cemetery changed Stone suppliers or ownership and doesn't have records of the original purchase
The surviving family members don't know where their parents bought the memorial from
The cemetery/monument dealer wants to charge an arm and a leg for the new Stone death date scroll and you cannot afford it

Of course there may be other reasons, but these are the most common. Now that we know why it is difficult to find a death date for a Stone marker, we can talk about how to get this job done.

Determining What Kind of Stone Death Date Scroll You Need

The first job is to determine who manufactured the Stone grave marker. Since there are quite a few Stone manufacturers, the best way to determine this is to take a photograph of the entire Stone memorial for the purpose of identifying the design. Unfortunately, Stone grave markers aren't made with a part number on the front and this just adds to the difficulty. A close up photograph of the existing Stone date scroll will help to identify the font style. Use a digital camera for best results. Digital images are also easier to email.

Stone death date scrolls are usually one of two styles.

The name, date of birth and date of death are on the scroll
Only the year date is on the scroll

Next, take out your ruler and take down these measurements of the Stone date scroll to be replaced or ordered. Measure to the nearest 1/16th of an inch.

The entire length of the Stone scroll (left to right)
The width of the scroll (top to bottom - NOT thickness)
The distance between the screw holes (center to center)
The size of the lettering used for the date and name (top to bottom)

Also, get a rubbing of the Stone date of death scroll as this will help in trying to get the right date scroll. Most Stone manufacturers may require one when placing an order for an updated death date scroll. Once you have the measurements, photographs and text to be cast, you can start visiting local monument dealers or inquire with an online headstone dealer.

Remember, when providing the information, be sure to include:

A photograph of the entire Stone design
A close up photograph of the Stone scroll
The measurements of the scroll
The text to be cast on the new date scroll

If you live in a rural area or have limited resources for headstone dealers, you can always look online for a headstone dealer that provides Stone date of death scrolls. You may find their prices to be even better than local sources.
