In Loving Memory Poems
By Christine O'Shea
In loving memory poems can be very difficult to read,
especially when they are for someone who was very close
or special to you. But what type of funeral poems should
you look for? There is no right or wrong poems for such
a sad occasion, you just need something which reminds
you of the person you have lost and their life. Don't be
fooled that these have to be sad or depressing.
We have had a terrible start to 2008; we lost three
family members in such a short space of time (3 months).
Each one of the deaths came as a shock and they were
three individual characters, which meant that all of the
church readings, eulogies and funeral poems had to
reflect each person.
I have no idea how close you were to the person who has
just died but the fact that you are looking for in
loving memory poems leads me to think that you were
close to them. Whether you are reading the poem at the
church or graveside, have someone who can step in for
you, just in case everything gets too much, they don't
usually have to take over, they just have to be there
for your support which is usually enough to keep you
Some of the best poems for funerals have been around for
many years, written by famous poets, but again the poem
needs to suit the person and the type of person they
were. If you are having a lot of people at the funeral
don't cater for the masses, by this I mean that you
should pick out something which feels close to your
memories of them rather than try to please the whole
congregation with something vague.
If you want something which is less personal which the
rest of the funeral party can relate to, get the person
who is performing the service to read that one.
Looking for the best poems for funerals is not an easy
task at the best of times. I know some of what you are
feeling right now which is why I wrote this article.
If you are still looking for funeral poems, I have
written more on the subject which I hope you may find
Some of the best in loving memory poems are written by
ordinary people with no background in poetry. When a
death occurs we seem to be able to find the right words,
all we need is a little inspiration - I hope you find
the inspiration and right words to express your feelings
at this sad time.
